According to a report by a responding NYPD Officer, Armonk resident Richard Haberman admitted to being under the influence when he struck two individuals with his car in the Bronx in July 2012, killing one pedestrian.

Armonk resident Richard Haberman was arraigned in July on multiple charges related to a fatal car crash in the Bronx, N.Y.

Haberman’s charges included aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter in the first degree, leaving the scene of an accident, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of a drug or alcohol, assault, harassment and reckless driving.

The accident occurred at the intersection of 170th Street and the Grand Concourse, where Haberman was accused of speeding through a red light and hitting two pedestrians. He only came to a stop after crashing into an ambulance responding to the scene, police said.

Police said Haberman struck Juan Rivera-Quintana and Ariel Rivera at the intersection, and that Rivera-Quintana died. Rivera was taken to a local Bronx hospital with a broken femur, arm and jaw as well as internal injuries. The ambulance driver, Jason Saffon, suffered burns on his arm, police said.

Haberman’s blood alcohol content was 0.234 percent at the time of the accident, police said. According to a report by the responding NYPD Officer John Dooley, Haberman admitted to being under the influence during the accident.

“I’ve been drinking. I just came from a bar,” Haberman said. “I’m not a bad guy. I just smoked marijuana a few hours ago.”
