ARMONK, N.Y. - As the new year approaches, TheDailyArmonk.com has compiled a list of the top 10 stories to come out of town in 2011. We hope readers look back on these events, determine how they've impacted life in North Castle and reflect on how they might continue to influence the community in 2012.
Hurricane Irene, the large and powerful Atlantic hurricane that swept through Westchester on August 28, caused significant property damage in North Castle. Torrential rains and winds between 50 and 70 mph with gusts of 85 mph or more wreaked havoc on North Castle with significant power losses reported. About 3,400 homes in North Castle lost power and Con Edison said the fierce winds knocked trees into power lines, poles and transformers, causing more power outages than any storm in history. North Castle utilized the Hergenhan Rec Center as an emergency shelter, providing food, medical supplies, cots and blankets.
Snow in October
A freak October snow storm on October 29 dumped 12.5 inches on Armonk and caused major power outages. Fallen branches, limbs and downed wires caused the power outages with blocked roads making driving hazardous. The storm set snow fall records for the area with deaths reported in surrounding states.
