SUNY Purchase Pushes Voter Registration

HARRISON, N.Y. — Alexandria “Alex” Wojcik was at Purchase College standing behind a table covered with a cloth emblazoned with American flags and a sign that carried the message: “Only 28 hours left to register to vote.”

Wojcik, the project coordinator of the Purchase New York Public Interest Research Group chapter, referred to this time as “the blitz.” With a registration deadline of Friday, Wojcik and her team were rushing to register as many students as possible.

Wojcik and other members of NYPIRG at Purchase have been working since the first day of classes to recruit students to register.

“It’s a right [to vote], not a privilege,” said Wojcik. “That’s something that seems to have been forgotten.”

Every day NYPIRG has a table with clipboards full of voter registration forms set up on the main mall of the SUNY Purchase campus. In addition to “tabling,” Wojcik said the group has also visited classrooms to inform students about voter registration.

“We also do what we call dorm-storming,” explained Wojcik. “We go door to door in each residence hall to have one on one interactions with as many students as possible.”

Past events include Rave the Vote, in which NYPIRG threw a voter registration party in the student center on campus. The party drew a large crowd of students, with nearly 100 submitted registration forms at its end. According to Wojcik, the number of students registered to vote is approaching 700.

“This election is going to change things for us,” said Laura Case, a freshman member of the of the Purchase NYPIRG chapter. “We really have the opportunity to empower people, to let them exercise their right to vote.”

For the final hours before the voter registration deadline, Wojcik and the NYPIRG team are standing outside all day, and will be “storming the apartments” on campus.

“We just need to get everyone registered. We’re hoping to have 1,000 students registered by the deadline,” said Wojcik.
