Republican Smith Unofficial Winner District 3

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. –  In a race that could change the balance of power on the Westchester County Board of Legislators,  Republican challenger Michael Smith is the unofficial winner of the District 3 county legislator's race.

The current 12-5 split on the board gives the Democrats a supermajority, which County Executive Rob Astorino, a Republican, has said blocks all of his reform efforts.

According to results posted Thursday on the Westchester County Board of Elections' website, with 100 percent of the districts reporting, Smith received 51 percent of the votes totaling 5,063 while Democrat John Nonna received 49 percent of the votes totaling 4,940, a 123 vote difference.

Although he estimated that as many as 250 absentee ballots are still yet to be counted, Smith said he's happy to be the unofficial victor.

"I'm in a great position right now,"  Smith said in a phone interview.  "I would rather be the guy that is up 123 votes and waiting for a week than the guy who is down 123 and waiting for a week." Smith said it could take until next Thursday to determine an official winner.  Nonna echoed those same figures on Wednesday.   At this point of the race, Smith said he remains confident. "I've felt good this entire campaign," Smith said.  "I feel the people were really listening to my message." A message left with Nonna, a two-term incumbent, who ran on the Democrat, Working Families and Independence lines, has not yet been returned.

This is Smith’s first political race.

District-3 encompasses Mount Pleasant, Pleasantville, and Sleepy Hollow, and parts of Greenburgh, and North Castle and Briarcliff Manor. Stay with The Daily Mount Pleasant for more on this story.
