Breaking News: Warning Issued After New Tick Species Discovered In Westchester

Recycle Hazardous Household Goods for Earth Day

VALHALLA, N.Y. – Westchester County is making strides this month to improve its green initiatives by opening a new recycling facility and celebrating Earth Day at the Kensico Dam.

“Earth Day is April 22, but Westchester has enough environmental initiatives slated for April to fill a whole month,” County Executive Rob Astorino said in a statement.

The county began by opening the state-of-the-art Household Materials Recovery Facility in Valhalla. The facility, located on the Grasslands Campus, will allow county residents to dispose of hazardous materials such as pesticides, batteries, cleaning products, televisions, computer screens and propane tanks, among many others. Old prescriptions can be taken on the first Tuesday of every month, and shredding services will also be available. Recycled items such as plastic, aluminum and papers should be placed for pickup with local municipalities, not taken to the Recovery Facility.

“With this new facility, we are making disposal of hard-to-get-rid-of household items even more convenient,” Astorino said in a statement.

The facility will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Drop-offs must be made by appointment by calling 914-813-5425.

The county will hold its main Earth Day celebration at the Kensico Dam Plaza on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents can shop a market of local farmers and green businesses, speak with gardeners for home gardening tips and learn ways to save money while going green.

Musical performances by Annie and the Natural Wonder band as well as Westchester’s Solar punch will entertain throughout the day. The event is free and open to the public.
