Port Chester Workshop Aims To Prevent Foreclosures

PORT CHESTER, N.Y.  -- Atiya Leary knows the hardest part about going into foreclosure can be accepting that it's actually happening. "Denial will absolutely lead to losing your property, " said Leary, a housing counselor at Human Development Services of Westchester based in Port Chester. "The sooner you accept it, the more negotiating options you will have."

Leary assists people from throughout the county who are in danger of foreclosing on their mortgages. Put simply, they are failing to make the loan payments on their homes. "What we want people to understand is that foreclosure is a process, not some doomsday event," said Leary.

HDSW provides free workshops throughout the year led by counselors like Leary to educate homeowners about the process of foreclosure and to identify the best options moving forward with the aim of keeping them in their homes. HDSW is certified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide housing counseling services, which Leary said is an important designation due to the proliferation of scam artists who claim they can help people avoid foreclosure and end up taking their money.

Leary said she understands it can be difficult to accept the possibility of losing your home, but it doesn't hurt to make a simple phone call to get some honest advice. HDSW will be holding its next workshop at their offices at 28 Adee St on August 24 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. To register for the workshop call: (914) 939-2005, or email: Private consultations can also be arranged. Are you or someone you know in danger of foreclosure? What organizations have you or they reached out to for help?
