I've been reading some of these comments and can't believe people post without doing some research or repeat what someone on the evening news tells you are facts.Heres some fun facts right off the FBI website. There were 373 murders by rifles last year, yes that includes those nasty so called assault weapons that we're told kills thousands every year.More people were killed in fist fights then by rifles.Heres another one ccw holders save over 2100 lives everyday.Theres 87 people killed by illegal hanguns, out of those 87 about 78 are repeat criminals.Legal gun owners only account for .001% of crimes with a gun and that includes police and accidents that were later chared with a crime.Theres places where guns are banned like chicago,La,DC,they have the highest mureder rate in the country, because when guns are banned it's easy pickins for the criminals and only criminals have guns. You rarely hear the good side of legal gun ownership because it dosen't fit the liberal press agenda

gb85:

You people are crazy... All you Americans are obsessed with a bunch of rights that were afforded to you over 200 years ago! You interpret them out of context and don't even fully understand them. Why don't you start focusing on doing what's right rather than on the outdated right. May I remind you, when you were given the right to own weapons there was a real threat to your life everyday. Also the weapons available then were muskets that took a lot of time and effort to reload after each single shot! Not something that can kill 20 ppl in a matter of seconds. Give your heads a shake and look at reality! You've created this problem by your scared ways (always afraid of something) and your obsession with arming yourselves with weapons you have no right to posess. You did this to yourselves by wanting these so called "freedoms". So either suck it up and know there will be more senseless violence if you continue to want to be a gun toting nation or do the right thing and tighten up gun laws... Your politicians clearly won't do it so I think the citizens have to make a stand and that's just what this paper is doing.

Jaques Mihov:

The Second Amendment was put into place to defend against government tyranny. It wasn't about hunting. You're cute with freedoms in quotes. How would you like your First through Tenth bill of rights abolished, those founding fathers were out of context too. Clearly the founding fathers didn't intend for the assault journalist to have powerful assault computers and the assault internet to expose your neighbor.

ilaurenloves:

Those names are Public knowledge anyway. People act as if this is an invasion of a privacy they would normally have :/

Jackal:

They have. they got a permit and advised the LAW. True most robbers wear a mask to let you know they are the bad guys but a mask can come in many forms. If... your life is ever saved by a person with a CCW, I hope you become a man at that point and thank them. Jackal

DBsRedVett:

One of the things I did notice on the MAP of Gun Permit/Owners that some homes are right next door to Day Camps, Schools. So what is going to happen to the Day Camp businesses, are they now going to find people will not be signing up their child this summer because they saw this map and now they are afraid of Legal Guns users and/or Retired Officer who has the right to a gun permit and legal gun, whom all may very well have the cleanest records. Show the Mentally Ill or Child Molester in this area who has a shady past. This could very well hurt businesses, If I'm going to sell my house, someone now has a list, they could easily tell the brokers, do not show me houses in this area, so me as a home owner looking to sell, could be sitting on my house for years with no bites because of my next door neighbor. Who cares about their next door neighbor I don't, I want to come and go as I please without anyone bothering me, you don't bother me I won't bother you.........

Jackal:

exactly right. the paper is changing the land values...oh yes and more when this keeps on going. The paper went too far this time. good meaning people will be used against you. The city is allowing this to keep on... this is only the start or could be that a strong firm will stand up. good insite, Jackal

DBsRedVett:

Here's part of an article someone told me read on LoHud.com....
The governor should also address the state’s unique role in the firearms industry; as The Associated Press reported last week, state taxpayers have invested nearly $6 million over the last three years subsidizing Ilion-based Remington Arms Co., manufacturer of semi-automatic rifles like those used in the Connecticut school shooting and the fatal shooting of two firefighters outside Rochester on Christmas Eve — weapons many now wish to make off-limits to the public. “Some elected leaders want tighter restrictions on those guns but none say it’s time to stop supporting Remington Arms Co. and its nearly 1,000 jobs in the Central New York community of Ilion,” the AP reported.

Go after them, leave the legal Gun Permit/Owner alone.

Jackal:

Let me start by saying, I obey the law, again, I obey the law!
I am applauded by this NY news paper selling/showing names of people who obey the law getting a CCW. Yes selling... after all, that’s what its about, to sell papers right? Something is backwards here. The Law abiding citizens are being posted on the paper and the Thief's are not? Interesting isn't it. Further more, I cant believe that a few of the people on this list....or the new list about to come out, are not lawyers that would put a stop to this. Let me ask you this. Why not have a list, a new theme each week or month. Examples you ask? Ok, my neighbor gets hurt with a power tool. Does he have HIV? Let me check the list, after all the paper says I have a right to know and protect myself. How about a neighbor who is a convicted thief, or a murderer who is now out of jail? Maybe a list of child molesters one month. After all, ....well I don’t wish to say. Then the biggie...... Mental health... sure for all the people with registered cases of being instuted for mental problems. After all this is what is claimed to be the #1 cause for this type of violent actions. Oh wait domestic violence cases, you know someone was raised and could not live with the way they was abused. So they took action on the public. Malpractice suits on doctors!!! Hey don’t want to risk my life with a bad doctor. The list goes on and on doesn’t it. People that obey the law are a news target??? Really?......REALLY? If this letter sounds stupid to you, then think what the news paper looks like. This is so wrong. Far be it from me to say this cause I don’t live in New York nor will I ever! Shame on you! Shame....on.... YOU! This is very poor journalism. Grasping for any straw to keep their job. Shame on you. From a concerned law biding citizen who will forever protect his home and family I say its too bad you are doing this. I think I would almost be better off to NOT have a CCW permit and be a surprise to a bad person as they are trying to be to me. Last thought, did the person who released this listing have a back ground check and show that they are of sound mind?

DrewA:

By doing what the Journal News did , they published the addresses of all the Police officers in the area ... Now putting there families at risk ... Way to go ...

Jackal:

agree with you Drew

Mika:

I just want to say that I am not an owner of guns nor do I condone the thousands a year of unnecessary killings / deaths that take place in our country by many lunatics. This poll is nonsensical. Why would names of innocent people be made public? They are not criminals for owning the guns! It's not relevant at all! People should just turn in their guns and call it a day! What People need to do now is take extreme caution housing their guns. Guns should be kept away in a secure, safe and out of reach place for any member of the household. Harsher policies need to be put in place ! It should no longer be as easy as showing a valid ID! A full psychological evaluation should be required, an extensive background check should be done- involving any criminal activity involving guns in the past etc. People lets do better-it's getting very insensitive that a madman can kill innocent 5, 6, 7 year olds!! We have had enough!

suki.vandijk:

The information the Journal News published WAS public information. You are supposed to be a news organization Rye Daily Voice, why would you publish such a misleading poll question?

kmr303:

The JN may have had a "right" to publish names and addresses of gun owners; however, what they failed to realize is that the list is not updated, as my address was listed and there are no guns at my house. So now what?

Baron VonCurious:

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, oh!! Please sue them. Stick your video recorder out to catch the trollers by your home, be very afraid and sue them.

suki.vandijk:

Actually that is exactly what they published. Saying this is not a list of gun owners, simply a list of people who applied for handgun permits. It doesn't mean they have a handgun and it doesn't mean they don't have a long gun which doesn't need permitting. They also differentiated between permits applied for/renewed in the last five years and those that were earlier.

Why doesn't the major newspapers [Gannett????] Magazines.[TIME]????and internet providers
PUBLISH THIS FOR A CHANGE....ON THEIR FRONT PAGE.

"MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON THEIR SOULS"

T’was 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38

T’was 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38
When 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven's gate.
Their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air.
They could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there.
They were filled with such joy, they didn't know what to say.
They remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day.

"Where are we?" asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse.
"This is heaven." declared a small boy. "we're spending Christmas at God's house."
When what to their wondering eyes did appear,
But Jesus, their savior, the children gathered near.
He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same.
Then He opened His arms and He called them by name.

And in that moment was joy, that only Heaven can bring
Those children all flew into the arms of their King
And as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace,
One small girl turned and looked at Jesus' face.
And as if He could read all the questions she had
He gently whispered to her, "I'll take care of mom and dad."

Then He looked down on earth, the world far below
He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe
Then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand,
"Let My power and presence re-enter this land!"
"May this country be delivered from the hands of fools"
"I'm taking back my nation. I'm taking back my schools!"

Then He and the children stood up without a sound.
"Come now my children, let me show you around."
Excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran.
All displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can.
And I heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight,
"In the midst of this darkness, I AM STILL THE LIGHT."

My address is on that map and I don't possess a handgun or have a permit. the list was not edited prior to publication so we are left to wonder if some criminal will break in looking for firearms. Very irresponsible journalism!

Jackal:

Thats right!!! well put

WPEyesNEars:

You know what else the Urinal News also did that no one is saying? They stole all the FOIL request FEES that hundreds, maybe thousands of people would have had to pay the municipality to get this information. Well done Cyndee, et al.

Francis T McVetty:

The publishing of these names and addresses jeopardizes those named. It puts at risk not only of the person named but his family and property. Want to steal a weapon, then you have an address. It is an open invitation. By the way some of those named are police officers. Did the numskulls at LoHud even think about that? Try to get a location, on a map, of the sexual predators in your neighborhood and the ACLU would be all over that saying that it violated their rights.

Absolutely not. Why don't you publish the names and addresses of wife beaters and child abusers instead? Most have been a tough week in the news room to stoop to such irresponsible journalism.

Subject: SHOTGUN

Read this and weep...it's coming faster than the blink of an eye~~

Here ya go:

You're sound asleep when you heara thump outside your bedroom door.

Half-awake, and nearly paralyzed with fear, you hear muffled whispers.
At least two people have broken into your house and are moving your way.

With your heart pumping, you reach down beside your bed and pick up your shotgun.

You rack a shell into the chamber, then inch toward the door and open it.

In the darkness, you make out two shadows.

One holds something that looks like a crowbar.

When the intruder brandishes it as if to strike, you raise the shotgun and fire.

The blast knocks both thugs to the floor.

One writhes and screams while the second man crawls to the front door

and lurches outside.

As you pick up the telephone to call police, you know you're in trouble.

In your country, most guns were outlawed years
before, and the few that are privately owned are so stringently regulated as to make them useless..
Yours was never registered.
Police arrive and inform you

that the second burglar has died.
They arrest you for First Degree Murder
and Illegal Possession of a Firearm.
When you talk to your attorney, he tells
you not to worry: authorities will probably plea the case down to manslaughter.

"What kind of sentence will I get?" you ask.

"Only ten-to-twelve years,"

he replies, as if that's nothing.

"Behave yourself, and you'll be out in seven."

The next day, the shooting is the lead
story in the local newspaper.
Somehow, you're portrayed as an eccentric vigilante while the two men you shot are represented as choirboys.
Their friends and relatives can't find
an unkind word to say about them..
Buried deep down in the article, authorities acknowledge that both "victims" have been arrested numerous times.

But the next day's headline says it all:

"Lovable Rogue Son Didn't Deserve to Die."

The thieves have been transformed from career criminals into Robin Hood-type pranksters..

As the days wear on, the story takes wings.

The national media picks it up,

then the international media.

The surviving burglar
has become a folk hero.

Your attorney says the thief is preparing

to sue you, and he'll probably win.

The media publishes reports that your home has been burglarized several times in the past and that you've been critical of local police for their lack
of effort in apprehending the suspects.

After the last break-in, you told your neighbor that you would be prepared next time.

The District Attorney uses this to allege

that you were lying in wait for the burglars.

A few months later, you go to trial.

The charges haven't been reduced,

as your lawyer had so confidently predicted.
When you take the stand, your anger at

the injustice of it all works against you..

Prosecutors paint a picture of you

as a mean, vengeful man.

It doesn't take long for the jury to convict you of all charges.

The judge sentences you to life in prison.

This case really happened.

On August 22, 1999, Tony Martin of Emneth, Norfolk , England , killed one burglar and wounded a second.

In April, 2000, he was convicted

and is now serving a life term..

How did it become a crime to defend one's own life in the once great British Empire ?

It started with the Pistols Act of 1903.
This seemingly reasonable law forbade selling pistols to minors or felons and established that handgun sales were to be made only to those who had a license.
The Firearms Act of 1920 expanded licensing to include not only handguns but all firearms except shotguns..
Later laws passed in 1953 and 1967 outlawed the carrying of any weapon by private citizens and mandated the registration of all shotguns.
Momentum for total handgun confiscation began in earnest after the Hungerford mass shooting in 1987.

Michael Ryan, a mentally disturbed man with a Kalashnikov rifle, walked down the streets shooting everyone he saw.

When the smoke cleared, 17 people were dead.

The British public, already de-sensitized by eighty years of "gun control", demanded even tougher restrictions.
(The seizure of all privately owned handguns was the objective even though Ryan used a rifle.)

Nine years later, at Dunblane , Scotland ,
Thomas Hamilton used a semi-automatic weapon to murder 16 children and a teacher at a public school.

For many years, the media had portrayed all gun owners as mentally unstable, or worse, criminals.
Now the press had a real kook with which to beat up law-abiding gun owners.
Day after day, week after week, the media gave up all pretense of objectivity and demanded a total ban on all handguns.
The Dunblane Inquiry, a few
months later, sealed the fate of the
few sidearms
still owned by private citizens.

During the years in which the British government incrementally took away most gun rights, the notion that a citizen had the right to armed self-defense came to be seen as vigilantism.
Authorities refused to grant gun licenses to people who were threatened, claiming that self-defense was no longer considered a reason to own a gun.
Citizens who shot burglars or robbers or rapists were charged while the real criminals were released.

Indeed, after the Martin shooting, a police spokesman was quoted as saying,
"We cannot have people take the law into their own hands."

All of Martin's neighbors
had been robbed numerous times,
and several elderly people were severely injured in beatings by young thugs who had no fear of the consequences.
Martin himself, a collector of antiques,
had seen most of his collection
trashed or stolen by burglars.

When the Dunblane Inquiry ended,
citizens who owned handguns
were given three months to turn them over to local authorities.

Being good British subjects,
most people obeyed the law.
The few who didn't were visited by police
and threatened with ten-year prison sentences if they didn't comply.

Police later bragged that they'd taken
nearly 200,000 handguns from private citizens.

How did the authorities know who had handguns?
The guns had been registered and licensed.
Kind of like cars. Sound familiar?

WAKE UP AMERICA ; THIS IS WHY OUR FOUNDING FATHERS PUT THE SECOND AMENDMENT IN OUR CONSTITUTION.

"...It does not require a majority to prevail,
but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds.."

--Samuel Adams

If you think this is important,

And there are stupid people
in congress and on the street
that will go right along with more "GUN LAWS"
Enforce what is on the BOOKS NOW........not more laws
ALSO my cat loves the Journal news in his box .It's YELLOW Journalism at it's best...the staff should be "FIRED"along with management for dividing AMERICA ....Now the real "HOODS" know where the guns are and are not .
PLUS arm a select group of teachers in our schools across America.
See what has been done in ISRAEL and Texas
Plus the Gannett chain [across America]should investigate where the dope is and where gangs are .
Now that the paper has shown it's TRUE COLORs I will ask 10 who will ask 1000 who will ask 10,000 not to support "GANNETT"
Anyway Newspapers are a thing of the past only good for cat boxes

Baron VonCurious:

Have your home and most expensive belongings held in a trust, just for this sort of thing.

What will make the change you want is not publishing the owners details, but an organized systemic boycott of all its advertisers.

Francis T McVetty:

Thank you!!!

cjmesq:

What an excellent post. History has shown us that whenever a country imposes gun control..literally barring it's countrymen from owning or possessing a handgun, rifle or even a shotgun...disaster strikes.

Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, et.al, imposed strict control, thus enabling them to commit genocide against their own people.

Baron VonCurious:

EXACTLY. Bank of America illegally freezes the assets of gun and gun parts sellers. While they walk away with your life savings and homes, they certainly don't want you armed. Obama's kids as well as he himself has armed guards. But you, to him you are expendable.

Janet hassan has been reported to have hired armed guards. No, the hypocrisy is too much for me. Somebody prove this is true!!! OMG.

Why does Janet and obama have armed guards and they want to take away your rights? hum? hum?

MillwoodResident:

Please change the stock photo you have associated with this story. It is misleading and inflammatory.

KRider:

No. And I wouldn't suggest you all doing it either - the angry gun owners have published all of LoHud's staff addresses and phone numbers resulting in massive lols. Plus they're losing subscribers like woah.

jimdisney:

If I were a bad guy , I would thank the journal news for telling me the house I should rob if I needed a gun .
Not being a bad guy , I truly hope nothing happens to anyone at those homes due to your reporting .
What I do hope happens , They all sue your ass off .

GDeFaber1:

The Journal News reporting of licensed pistol permit owners was only intended to inflame the gun debate and draw readership to a newspaper in decline. Illegal gun owners are not listed (that is obvious) as well as any rifle or shotgun owner. Whether you agree or disagree with legal gun ownership, publishing the name and address of people who are statistically the least likely to commit a crime with a gun does nothing to solve the problem. I wonder if the Journal News and all the other anti-gun zealots would be as fast on the trigger to repeal the 1st and 14th amendments as they are to repeal the 2nd.

Hazmat1:

I just hope no one gets hurt in the homes that were listed. There are families in these homes. It will be on the JN if another child is killed because some criminal wants a free gun. Good job JN hope you sleep well.

What I would like to know is where the illegal, unregistered guns are!

i miss ossining:

So I have been thinking of LoHud's & Journal News' reckless act of publishing these people's named and addresses all morning and have discovered that they finally helped answer a question I've had for some time. While I am both in favor of common-sense gun control laws and background checks and also have no issue with fellow citizens choosing to obtain a firearm through legal channels, I have always wondered why the NRA has been so strongly opposed to having to get a gun permit and gun registration ... now I know. They are concerned that some third-rate member of the press, in dire need of something to compensate for mediocre reporting and poor editorial judgement and management, will inexplicably publish the names and addresses of those who have been approved for permits, as if it contributed in some way to otherwise constructive dialogue on the topic. In truth, the result is providing the elected officials and members of the NRA who might have otherwise been considering a less extreme position, on one side of the debate or the other, something concrete to point to as a reason not to agree to more reasonable middle-ground common sense gun laws. Thank you LoHud / Journal News for making the dialogue less productive and needlessly endangering more law-abiding citizens. Pathetic, selfish, and thoughtless.

Billy320:

I own rifles so it's no concern of mine

DBsRedVett:

They are planning on listing all of you too, as of last night. I know my brother has rifles he was not listed, but we where for the gun permits and wheres there are permits you know there are LEGAL GUNS.

Francis T McVetty:

Billy320, so "I own rifles so it's no concern of mine" really. You are next!!!

firecommish:

Why go after those who abide by the law? Very irresponsible journalism.

tigersbaseball2:

and Adam Lanza's gun was legally purchased as well by his mother and look what happened!!! Those poor families who lost loved ones have to deal with there loss on a daily basis for something so horrific, the registered guns should be know to the public.

CazNY1:

I have cancelled subscription to Journal News/Lo HUD and am sending more money to NRA to protect gun owner rights. Do I need to say more?

ladeelee:

the only option anyone has to show their displeasure with the action of the journal news, if they are subscribers, is to hit their pocketbook and cancel your subscription. That is the only way to make your point and statement.
The list of legal registered gun owners is available to the public, however, it was not a necessary list the the Journal News needed to obtain or to publish... Legal registered gun owners are not ashamed of their owning a legally obtained gun, but the Journal News should be ashamed of this tactic of publishing the list as it served no purpose in the ongoing talks about gun control at all. It was to sell newspapers once more. As the saying goes " if it bleeds, it reads"......isn't that sad. And perhaps the Daily Voice should further examine their consciences, as certainly the picture that accompanies the article does not depict what it should have. Lets get to the truths EVERYWHERE and start reporting the specifics and not the speculations.......
p. s. my subscription to the Journal New was cancelled immediatly.

Mac376:

Thank you MOJWNUN for your comments. We can all stop the debate now that you have pointed out to us where we are all wrong. It is so great to have people like you in this world that think they are the smartest person in the room and we are all wrong for having a difference of opinion.

mojwnun:

Thank you for the compliment! It's especially meaningful, coming from someone who has expressed his/her opinion here 26 times on various issues since June, to hear that my sole post on one issue has the potential to "stop the debate." But if you say so...

Ralph Perrigino:

Even if it is a matter of public record why would some nosy s;(t stirrer want to find out. And if you did find out that your neighbor had one or twenty legally licensed handguns what are you going to do about it. Remember .,,your neighbor with a handgun could one day save YOUR life .

one unusual guy:

You're joking, I hope. Any idea how low the number of crimes thwarted by someone with a legal weapon is? It makes big news when it happens but the percentage is so low as to be negligible.

I'm not sure what the point of exposing legal gun owners is. I would be interested in knowing who owns a military caliber weapon but they don't list by weapon. I don't care about legally registered handguns or hunting rifles. All I care about is banning military grade weapons. No private citizen needs a uzi or any other weapon with a banana clip to defend his home.
