A female motorist had a very scary moment when a deer crashed through the windshield of her car in Fairfield County on Friday morning, June 8, state police said.

The incident occurred on Route 8 in Trumbull when the deer ran onto the highway in front of the car shown above as the woman was driving southbound near exit 8.

After the deer was struck, it went through the windshield into the car. Luckily the operator was able to keep control of her car and pull to the right shoulder, police said. Amazingly she suffered only minor injuries.

Police are offering a few reminders to residents regarding deer:

* Slow down when passing yellow animal-crossing signs. These warnings are posted because heavy animal traffic is known to frequent the area.

* Deer are most frequently hit during dusk and dawn. Look for reflecting eyes.

* At night your vehicle’s headlights can only help you see so far up ahead, to allow for sufficient brake time reduce your speed.

* Deer may be grazing off to the side of the road, in the woods or in a grassy area, but they move quickly if startled.

* Remember, deer wander in groups. If you see one crossing the road, assume there’s at least one more.

* Don’t swerve to avoid a deer (or other wildlife). The consequences could be far worse than hitting the deer. Not only may swerving confuse the deer, but you could find yourself rolled over, down an embankment, crashed into a tree or involved in a head-on crash with another vehicle.
