Greenwich's Representative Town Meeting approved a ban on Monday, March 12 of single-use plastic bags in town but it does not come with a 23-cent fee per each paper bag used, something environmental advocates also were seeking.

By a vote of 141 to 54, with two abstensions, the town meeting approved the ban after more than two hours of debate, according to the Greenwich Free Press.

The ban is scheduled to go in effect in six months and bans single-use plastic bags from grocery stores and other local merchants. Paper bags can still be used by local businesses.

As townspeople arrived at Central Middle School for the meeting, they were greeted by dozens of students, many from the Greenwich High School’s Roots & Shoots Club, bearing handmade signs with slogans including, “Ban the Bag,” “Be Fantastic and Don’t Use Plastic,” and “The Future Is Not Plastic,” a reference to advice given Dustin Hoffman’s character Benjamin in the 1967 film "The Graduate," the Free Press reported.
