ARMONK, N.Y. -- The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy is using an IBM zEnterprise mainframe to analyze and process three million medical claims per week.
The move will reduce the time it takes to process medical claims by 60 percent, and help increase the quality of health care while reducing health care costs for its patients, according to a press release from IBM.
The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy's Medication Management Center provides personalized medication therapy management designed to optimize health outcomes for individual patients.
With more than 2.5 million members, the ability to quickly and efficiently analyze an influx of large amounts of data, such as medical records, medication information and claims, is imperative, IBM said in the release. The college expects its membership to grow to more than 10 million members in the next few years.
The new system has allowed the college to:
- Significantly reduce data load times to approximately one-third less than previously possible.
- Perform batch processes during normal business hours without disrupting operations.
- Provide a more scalable, higher-performing IT infrastructure to support and facilitate future growth.
- Allow for more than 160,000 medication changes for improved treatment, and more than $65 million in savings for customers and health plans served.
