ARMONK, N.Y. – The town of North Castle appointed Lieutenant William Fisher as provisional chief of police Wednesday night at its first Town Board meeting of 2013.

Fisher will fill the void left by retiring Chief of Police Robert D’Angelo. His retirement was acknowledged by the Town Board and is effective at the end of the workday Friday, Jan. 11.

D’Angelo, who has been with the force for 40 years - 21 of them as police chief -- received high praise from Town Supervisor Howard Arden and the rest of the board.

“I appreciate Chief D’Angelo’s 40 years here,” said Arden. “It is a retirement well deserved. We are equally appreciative of being able to pass the baton to someone as deserving as Lieutenant Fisher.”

Fisher was in attendance, and he thanked Chief D’Angelo and the Town Board for the promotion.

“I am extremely honored and proud to step into this position,” he said. “I couldn’t have gotten here without Chief D’Angelo, who was always there for me."

Fisher added: "My first week on the job, our staff will meet to set new goals and objectives, and work quickly on getting policies in place to achieve them. I know we’ll be successful.”

In addition to acknowledging D’Angelo’s well-earned retirement, the Town Board spoke highly of Fisher, as well.

“For those curious about Lieutenant Fisher’s dedication, let me take you back to Hurricane Sandy,” said Town Board member Michael Schiliro. “During that storm, our town was light years ahead of surrounding towns, thanks in large part to Lieutenant Fisher, who was working around the clock.”

Fisher said he is looking forward to bringing that same work ethic to his new position.

“Chief D’Angelo made this job look easy. It isn’t,” Fisher said. “This is the biggest challenge of my career, and I look forward to it.”
