In the letter, Harisch said Goldberg and the Town Board are hampering his abilities to perform his duties as police chief. Harisch's resignation would take effect Saturday, May 31.
"These actions are being taken against me despite the fact that I have rooted out corruption within the Police Department, boosted the morale of officers under my command and saved taxpayers thousands of dollars in overtime expenses," Harisch said.
Harisch, 62, who has been a police officer in the town for 27 years and police chief for nine months, said he would like to go back to being a lieutenant.
Harisch said he met with Goldberg in December 2012 and told her about past abuses by officers in the department only to see Goldberg attempt to promote one of the officers to the position of police commissioner.
Goldberg was fired last year by the outgoing Town Board only to be rehired in January by the new Town Board, led by Supervisor Michael Schiliro.
"I feared that her rehiring would embolden her, and ... her harassment and deception toward me would only intensify," Harisch said. "My concerns were completely disregarded, and my anticipated fears came true."
By going back to being a lieutenant, Harisch said, he will be protected from Goldberg's harassment by his union. Harish also called for an independent audit into potential overtime abuses by the department.
“We thank Geoffrey for his past and continued service to our town and exceptional Police Department,” Schiliro said.
According to The Examiner, Schiliro said he believed Harisch could return to his previous position and the town would review the situation.
Faith Berland, the town's comptroller, resigned earlier this year and filed a lawsuit, claiming Goldberg was a bully who discriminated against female employees.
Court Clerk Nancy Hall and her husband filed a racial discrimination complaint against Goldberg and the town last year, saying she was harassed by Goldberg and that her husband was denied a job because they are black.
Goldberg has denied the allegations.
