North Castle to Host Lego Engineering Workshop

A summer camp focused on engineering might not sound all that appealing to a child, but once the Lego brand name is thrown into the mix, the interest skyrockets. Play-Well TEKnologies teaches engineering to children in a way that is catching on throughout the county. They market themselves as an educational outreach organization that introduces children from Kindergarten to fifth grade to engineering, architecture, and physics. Their growth has also sparked a higher demand for instructors. The company has been in Westchester for roughly six years after its 1997 inception on the West Coast. Since it was extended to New York, demand has only increased.“We just found our niche in the market,” Ken Blinn, area manager for Westchester and lower Connecticut said. “We've tapped into something huge here.”Blinn said that teaching children with the use of Lego toys is a method that seems to work.“Once people taste what we do, they want more.”Play-Well will be hosting two simultaneous summer workshops for different age classes at the North Castle Hergenhan Community Center from Aug. 15 to 19. The Kindergarten to second grade classes run from 9 a.m. to noon, and the third to fifth grade classes run 1 p.m. to 4p.m.Founder Tim Bowen started Play-Well TEKnologies in 1997 with the intention to build problem-solving skills in children and provide them with an opportunity for more creative expression, according to the Play-Well mission statement.
