ARMONK, N.Y. Liz Thomas became North Castles new senior recreation leader about two weeks ago and shes already makings strides to improve the program.
I think theres so much potential here, Thomas said. The seniors are a fabulous group of people and theyre very wise. Theyve lived long lives and their spirits are so rich and I really think we can embellish the programs to do a lot more for the seniors."
Thomas has already created a walking program for the seniors on Monday mornings, in which they stroll around Wampus Brook Park.
Its such a beautiful loop around the pond and its great for the seniors because there are benches if they need a break and everyone can go at their own pace, she said. Maybe their coming off a surgery or they just want to build leg strength but were going to do it year-round, weather permitting.
Thomas has also implemented a designated shopping day, which will be on Thursdays between 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The seniors will be picked up by bus and brought to local shops.
Its for anybody who needs it, like people who dont have a car or that cant drive anymore, Thomas said. Whether its the grocery store, the bank, or post office, they can shop together.
The senior program is open for all seniors in Armonk and Thomas hopes shes able to reach out to them and do anything she can to make their leisure time more fun and productive.
Its never too late to feel as good as you possibly can and I want to be able to provide them with opportunities to do that, she said. Its a connection to another generation and theres so much that came before me and I see that in them. Theyve just had so many experiences in life and theyre here to have a good time so I want to be able to provide them with some interesting activities.
