NC4 Utilizes Hergenhan Center for Wi-Fi, Shelter

ARMONK, N.Y. - With more than 80 percent of North Castle residents without power, possibly until Thursday at midnight, North Castle Citizen Corp Council (NC4) is working around the clock to help residents in need.

The group set up shop at Hergenhan Recreation Center over the weekend and it plans to remain in service until power is restored.

Armonk resident John Bongaarts was supposed to be working in New York City Monday but Metro-North service hadn’t been resumed yet, so his need for Internet access led him to NC4.

“I work normally in the city but the trains are down and this is the only way I can get work done today,” Bongaarts said “I went to the library first and they didn’t have Internet so they sent me over here and this works fine for me.”

Shahla Baharlou, also of Armonk, said she had been to NC4’s shelter during a winter storm in 2010, but this time, she says, she really made good use out it.

“I was actually off from work this week but there’s still some stuff that I have to take care of,” Baharlou said. “I couldn’t do this at home so it’s great that I’m able to do it from here.”

Baharlou also was able to print off an important document for her daughter’s summer reading.

“My seventh grade daughter was very upset because she never printed her school reading requirement, so I’m printing that for her and she’ll be very happy,” Baharlou said. “These folks (NC4) are life-savers and it’s wonderful to have them.”

On Sunday, according to Jane Cahn, of NC4, four people spent the night at the shelter -- two were unable to reach their house due to a downed-tree blocking their road.

NC4 opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m., unless a situation arises where residents need the shelter for sleeping purposes, in which case there are volunteers on call after 10 p.m. to re-open the center.

The center also offers shower stalls, snacks, and water for anyone in need.
