More than 100 million Americans are expected to travel this month, prompting Cuomo to direct the MTA and Port Authority to heighten security in the region throughout the holiday season, including coordinated law enforcement efforts and National Guard enforcement at all bridges, tunnels and mass transit stations.

The enforcement includes the deployment of special operations teams that include bomb-sniffing dogs, an increase in heavily armed presence, enhanced surveillance and Rapid Radiation Response vehicles.

According to Cuomo, he is deploying special operations teams from the New York State Police and National Guard to work with the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority Police, MTA Police Department, Port Authority Police Department and New York City Police Department in this coordinated effort.

“During the holiday season the traffic in the metropolitan area increases. The number of visitors increases. People coming in to visit family. The number of truck deliveries increases through the holiday season,” he said.

“So it's a high volume time. It's a high traffic time. And given the increase in the volume in the traffic and given the recent events, we believe it's prudent to increase security at the major crossings and the major transportation hubs. We've obviously had several incidents recently. Around the world you're seeing increased tensions. So we think this is a prudent action.”
