MTA Cites Millennials As Drivers Of Change On Metro-North, Lirr

Add passenger rail traffic to the list of things millennials do differently from the generations before, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal.

MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas Prendergast has cited the need to accommodate millennials as a driving force behind new cars and stations and plans to create greater access to Penn Station.

Thomas Prendergast, chairman and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, said that while ridership on the Metro-North and Long Island railroads is at record highs, millennials are forcing the MTA to run like a “24/7/365 operation,” according to the Journal.

The difference in ridership patterns appears to be the result of younger workers who work hours beyond the once standard 9 a.m.-5 p.m., according to the Journal, which reported that younger workers frequent off-peak trains and travel to a greater number of locations outside New York City.

Citing the demographic shift, Prendergast told business and political leaders in Westchester that new cars and stations along with greater access to Penn Statin and enhanced communications tools will help the MTA adapt to the changing times, according to the Journal.
