To help commuters get a jump on their Labor Day weekend activities, Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials made adjustments to the Metro-North train schedule that includes early "getaway" trains Friday out of Grand Central Terminal.

A total of 17 "getaway" trains have been added to the Hudson, New Haven and Harlem lines, and they'll start running at 1 p.m. Friday. Some of the normal trains later Friday have been cancelled or combined to allow for the early service, MTA officials said.

The getaway trains will operate from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Nine getaway trains have been added to the New Haven line, five on the Hudson line and three on the Harlem line. Also, one extra departure has been added from Hoboken on the Port Jervis line, with connecting service from Penn Station.

Later in the day, 11 trains that typically leave Grand Central from 5:27 p.m. and 7:28 p.m. will not operate, and three pairs of New Haven line trains will be combined. Also, to accommodate the additional west of Hudson service, the 6:15 p.m. train from Hoboken on the Port Jervis line will not run, as will the 7:20 p.m. train from Hoboken to Spring Valley on the Pascack Valley line.

Saturday and Sunday service on Metro-North will remain on the normal weekend schedule. On Labor Day, Sunday service is planned for the Harlem, New Haven and Hudson lines while Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines will use weekend service, MTA officials said.

On the Port Jervis line, one additional inbound train has been added at 4:09 p.m. Monday for riders headed to Hoboken or Manhattan.
