Meteor Shower Peaks in Westchester County

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. — The annual Perseid meteor shower should peak above Westchester County overnight but your view of the shooting stars could be obscured by a bright full moon, says Space.com .

While you're looking up at the night sky, NASA will host a live meteor shower web chat from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., CNN says . NASA says about 20 to 30 meteors an hour will be visible and the best place to watch will be from the northern hemisphere, according to CNN.

The Perseid meteor shower is caused by debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, which swings through the inner solar system every 133 years and leaves behind a trail of dust and gravel, NASA says.

When Earth passes through the debris, specks of "comet-stuff" hit the atmosphere at 140,000 mph and disintegrate in flashes of light. These meteors are called Perseids because they fly out of the constellation Perseus, NASA says.

Where will you watch the meteor shower?
