Kids Do Yoga at Armonk Rec Center

ARMONK, N.Y. – Barbara Scott, a certified Kripala yoga instructor from Norwalk, who teaches classes for adults, teens and even golfers, holds a Kids Yoga class at the Hergenhan Recreation Center, where a small group of fourth to sixth-graders assembles for an eight week class on Thursday afternoons.

When asked how yoga benefits kids, Scott said, "Children are so stressed out, it boggles the mind. Yoga helps them unwind."

Scott said she teaches different kinds of yoga based on the mood of the kids. "If they're tired, I create a restful situation and we lay down on the mats. If they're restless, we do yoga that's invigorating with a lot of movement."

Scott said she sees kids confidence levels build after they take the class.

Hannah Klein, one of the kids in Thursday's class, said, "Yoga calms me down on tests and helps me exercise."

After the eight week class, the kids will receive diplomas and become official yogis (boys) and yoginis (girls).
