Hundreds Hit The Gym in Armonk to Use Showers

ARMONK, N.Y. - Hundreds of North Castle residents who have been without power since Tropical Storm Irene have used showers at The Gym in Armonk, according to the fitness center’s General Manager Jamie Nicastri.

The Gym opened its doors to the public Monday afternoon to allow town residents to use the facility for bathing.

“We’ve had tons of people. I wasn’t quite sure at first how many people would come but we’ve had way more than I expected,” Nicastri said. “We had hundreds of people Monday and I was surprised about how many people came, but I’m happy about it.”

Nicastri first got the idea to open the showers to the public when she received a phone call from North Castle Councilman Diane Roth who was calling different businesses in town with available bathrooms and showers.

“It’s worked out very well and the only issue we have is with towels,” Nicastri said. “I had no idea how many people would be coming in so we’re a little limited with towels.”

An email sent by The Gym Monday asked residents to bring their own towels and toiletries but Nicastri said the staff has done a nice job of washing gym towels quickly.

“We have a great cleaning crew and I have to say they’ve done an awesome job keeping up with demand because we have tons of laundry,” Nicastri said. “Customer service has also been great because they’ve had to deal with a lot of extra responsibility like making sure, when people come in, that they show ID and sign a waiver.”

One thing Nicastri was worried about was how well The Gym’s members would react to so many people being permitted to use the facilities but she said it turned out to be a non-issue.

“All the members have been awesome,” Nicastri said. “You’re always concerned when you open up a private club to the public that some members won’t like it but I have to say, most of the members have been awesome about it and they’re happy we’re providing showers for everyone.”

The Gym will continue its shower service through the day Wednesday from 1pm-10pm and Nicastri said she will speak with Roth about extending the public offer past Wednesday if power outages remain.
