Families Make Quick Work of Black Friday

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - As a first time Black Friday shopper, Christine Vallantyne liked the deals she saw, but not the lines.

Vallantyne, a Mamaroneck resident, ventured out to the White Plains Galleria with her two grandsons Logan, 7, and Ryan, 5. Unlike many shoppers who had their long lists handy, they decided to wing it. "We were just shopping around," she said.

List or no list, Vallantyne couldn't avoid the obstacle all Black Friday shoppers must eventually face. "The checkout lines were long, so you didn't get to do as much shopping as you wanted," she said.

Despite the long lines, Vallantyne managed to spend only a few hours of her day at the Galleria. Similarly, Frances Garner made short work of her shopping list. The Washington, D.C. resident's Black Friday began at 9 a.m. making rounds at Wal-Mart and Target, where she covered her bases with DVDs and electronics. Later clothes, jewelry and fine china.

Garner, who is visiting her aunt and uncle in West Harrison for the holiday, was content to get a late start to avoid the early-morning madness. "I buy whatever I need online and let the crazies do what they want," said Garner, a Memphis native.

In contrast to reports of a woman pepper spraying other shoppers to get to the new X-Box 360 in a California Wal-Mart, Garner found the Galleria to be calm. "It was really calm, everybody was very polite and it hasn't been too crowded," she said. "There were some shoppers who tried to take advantage of other deals on top of those for Black Friday."

Tina Ellison, was disappointed she and her mother couldn't use their coupons, which weren't redeemable on Black Friday. But her family, who spent part of their day shopping at stores like H&M, found the deals that make Black Friday so popular, including 50 percent off on Polo hoodies at Macy's.
