A search of local big box and smaller stores in and around Westchester proved one point - people don't always have what they need for emergencies on hand. Like D batteries, the type used in most flashlights and portable radios.
Costco, Ace Hardware, a mom and pop hardware store and several local Stop & Shop supermarkets revealed no D batteries on hand, and while they are on order, none may arrive before Irene does this weekend.
A Stop & Shop manager in Port Chester said he was not sure if he would get any deliveries and, even if he did, he expected to run out in minutes. A local Ace Hardware store said much the same thing and the Port Chester Costco was stocked to the gunnels with all sorts of batteries, but not D.
Stores in White Plains like Burke and McGowan and shops in Elmsford were also completely out of stock.
One thing was made clear; homeowners should stock up on essentials well in advance of any anticipated storms.
Did you buy essentals like D batteries in advance of the rush? If not, what do you plan to do for light during and in the aftermath of Irene's winds and heavy rain? Please share here and on Facebook or Twitter.
