After participating in the National School Walkout on Wednesday , New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the launch of the “New York Students Against Gun Violence” website .

On Wednesday, Thousands of Hudson Valley students participated in various forms of protest at 10 a.m., joining their peers throughout the country as part of the ENOUGH National School Walkout, which is  “to protest Congress’ inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods.”

Cuomo joined American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew, and students at Leadership and Public Service High School in Manhattan to participate in the walkout on Wednesday, which lasted 17 minutes.

Following the walkout, Cuomo announced the new website , stating that “it’s now time for the federal government to catch up.”

“History provides moments where real change is possible. Many of the great social changes occur when the people are ahead of the politicians. The issue of sensible gun regulation provides that moment,” the website reads. “The people of New York were ahead of the curve when we passed the NY SAFE Act after the Sandy Hook massacre. History has unfortunately proven us right, and it is now time for the federal government to catch up.”

Cuomo went on to add that “you have more the students showing more leadership than some of the so-called leaders in Washington,” during the event.

"It's time for the horrifying mass shootings that have plagued this country for far too long to spur real action and real policy changes," he added. "Our states collectively already have better gun safety laws than the federal government, and by working together to share information and bolster enforcement, we will keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals and better protect our communities. If the federal government refuses to act, we will work together to enact the important reforms families deserve, and I welcome these new states to our coalition."
