Cuomo Lawyer Carey Gabay Shot During Eruption Of Violence Before Parade

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Carey Gabay, Gov. Andrew Cuomo's first deputy counsel, is in critical condition after being shot in the head Monday morning violence that erupted in Brooklyn prior to the start of the annual J'Ouvert Festival in Brooklyn, according to reports.

One person was killed and four injured in a series of shootings and stabbings in the official lead-in to the West Indian Day Parade.

The 43-year-old Gabay was with his brother when he was shot on Bedford Avenue after walking past an argument in which shots were fired.

Gabay was appointed Cuomo's first deputy counsel in January after serving as assistant counsel to the governor since 2011, a banking and finance associate at Jones Day from 2007 to 2009, and a structure products associate at Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP from 2002 to 2007. 

Gabay has a B.A. from Harvard College and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
