ARMONK, N.Y. - Armonk seniors who used to shop at the now-closed A&P are taking advantage of the North Castle Recreation & Parks bus service to the Stop & Shop in North White Plains.
On Thursday mornings, a 12-passenger bus departs from the Hergenhan Recreation Center, transporting seniors to the Stop & Shop and then dropping them off at home or back at Hergenhan if they have their own cars.
Liz Thomas, North Castle Recreation & Parks' senior recreation leader, said a total of 15 seniors use the service.
"It's vital for people who don't have their own cars," she said.
The department expanded its bus service after the A&P closed last month.
Laurette Provancher said, "It's a comfortable ride and the driver is excellent."
Many of the seniors miss the A&P. "I could run to the A&P every day," said Jean Sime. "I knew all the people there."
"The Stop & Shop is bigger than the A&P and it's hard to find things. I liked the size of the A&P," said Nellie Palamarcauk.
Provancher is looking forward to the opening of the new supermarket in Armonk Square. "When the new store comes, I'll shop there," she said.
