According to Cuomo, the rain, combined with snow melt in areas farther north could cause moderate flooding to already swollen rivers and streams, low lying areas or locations with poor drainage, prompting him to issue the warning, which will be in effect until Friday morning.
Cuomo said that he has ordered all emergency management personnel in the state to be prepared with assets and stockpiles to support response efforts that may arise overnight into Friday. The flood watch in Westchester, Putnam and Rockland will be in effect until 2 p.m. on Friday and in Dutchess until 8 a.m. Saturday.
In advance of potential flooding, Cuomo issued a series of flood safety preparedness tips:
- Learn the safest route from home or work to high, safe ground. Have a family escape plan and identify a meeting place if family members become separated.
- Program emergency numbers into cell phones.
- Make a list of valuables - including furnishings, clothing and personal property - that is kept in a safe place.
- Have a stockpile of emergency supplies of food and first aid equipment.
- Have automobiles fueled in case gas stations lose the ability to pump fuel for several days.
- Research where residences are located in relation to possible flood levels.
- Keep materials like sandbags, plywood, plastic sheeting and lumber handy for emergency water-proofing.
- Check your insurance coverage to ensure it covers flood damage.
“With heavy rain in the forecast, I am directing state agencies to prepare for potential flooding and I urge New Yorkers to exercise caution and stay safe,” he added. “New Yorkers should be ready for the possibility of hazardous travel conditions and state agencies will be on alert and prepared to assist communities across the state if the need arises.
