Armonk's Wampus Hills Students Experience Colonial Life

BYRAM HILLS, N.Y. -- Fourth-graders from Wampus School in Armonk learned this week what life was like for children in Colonial times during an annual visit to Smith’s Tavern.

During their visit, children rotated through different activities to understand how Colonial families lived and worked. They tried their hand at making butter and rolling hoops with sticks, which they quickly learned was harder than it looked.

The students also learned about the history of North Castle and the Quakers who settled the Armonk area. Several members of the North Castle Historical Society were on hand in period clothes to demonstrate Colonial customs and activities.

“They didn’t play basketball, they played with sticks and rings,” fourth-grader Rebecca Frieden said.
