Armonk Resident Saves Pool for Summer Fun

ARMONK, N.Y. – When Joseph DiMauro learned that the North Castle town pool was on the verge of closing its doors due to financial troubles, the longtime Armonk resident stepped in to keep the summer staple open.

“In December I found out that we weren’t going to have a pool any longer and that the campers weren’t going to have a place to go,” DiMauro said at a recent North Castle Town Board meeting.  “So I said this couldn’t be.”

He purchased the pool for an undisclosed amount in March and reopened it as the North Castle Pool and Tennis Club. The pool, formerly known as the Anita Louise Ehrman Pool, underwent a $3 million reconstruction in 2006 and experienced financial troubles since. In the time following the purchase, DiMauro gave the pool a facelift to repair many issues with the pool leading up to opening day over Memorial Day weekend.

“It wasn’t easy,” DiMauro said.  “We had many issues, but we were able to work through all of that.” DiMauro is chief excutive officer at Clark Dodge Asset Management, a capital management and investment advisory firm in White Plains.

Town Supervisor Howard Arden praised DiMauro for stepping up and saving the pool after it was originally suggested by the previous pool board that the town purchase the pool for $1.7 million, which would have required passing a referendum.

“I’d like to thank Joe for all of his hard work,” Arden said.  “To have this successful result is really rewarding for the whole town.”

The Pool and Tennis Club will host the North Castle Swimming and Diving teams as well as private parties and various events throughout the summer. DiMauro said the doors of the pool will not only remain open, but will be open to residents and nonresidents alike.

“This isn’t a club in the sense of a club,” DiMauro said. “We want everyone to join in on this because that’s how this pool is going to be successful.”

The upkeep of the pool will be paid mainly by membership fees, which can be purchased at various rates by both residents and nonresidents.
