Armonk Kids Learn Magic From a Pro

ARMONK, N.Y. – David Ferst, a professional magician from Thornwood who gave up law school for a career in magic, teaches Intro to Magic at the Hergenhan Recreation Center on Monday afternoons.

Ferst, a self-taught magician, teaches the class to 10 second through seventh-graders, some of whom are taking the class for the second time because they enjoy it so much, he said.

The students don’t just learn magic tricks. “My idea is for students to learn magic and lessons in life, how to entertain and be in social situations,” he said. “It’s confidence boosting and builds self-esteem.”

He teaches students coin tricks, card tricks and other tricks with everyday objects.

“I teach a few tricks each class,” he said. “The kids are smart and want to learn more.”

He said magic succeeds in “boosting their imagination."
