Armonk Day Camp Holds Annual Castle Building Day

ARMONK, N.Y .- Wednesday marked the one-week countdown until the end of the 2011 summer session at Breezemont Day Camp on Cox Avenue.

Campers enjoyed the annual sand castle building competition Wednesday, which the camp’s special events coordinator Allison Nadler said is not quite as competitive as it has been in past years.

“We find something wonderful about each group’s work,” Nadler said. “It started out more competitive in the past but this year we’re not doing it as competitive, so we’re kind of just finding something wonderful about each castle. As long as they’re having fun, which is what camp’s all about.”

Nadler, who has been working at Breezemont for 20-years, was a counselor at the camp for two years when she was in high school.

Assistant camp Director John Hessel, who has also worked at Breezemont for 20-years, is happy to see the campers still having fun this late in the season.

“[Sand castle building is] another good way to keep the kids active and keep their spirits up and here we are all the way in the seventh week of camp and they’re still really enjoying themselves,” Hessel said.

Hessel’s daughter Annie is a part of the fourth and fifth grade group called the “flickers” and she enjoys almost everything Breezemont has to offer, especially its lake activities.

“[Kayaking and Canoeing] are probably my favorite because then you get to be on the water,” Annie said. “I also like if you go capsizing because you get to go in the lake water,” Annie said.

Annie said she also really enjoys tennis and archery.

What is it about sand castle building the camper loves the most? “

I’m not sure,” Annie said. “Maybe the challenge.”
