Armonk Celebrates Frosty Day Dec. 10

ARMONK, N.Y. - Frosty Day coming to town Saturday, December 10, as part of a day of fun-filled family events in downtown Armonk in celebration of Christmas legend Frosty the Snowman.

Events begin at noon with a parade scheduled for 4:30 p.m. that will proceed down Main St. to Bedford Ave. and to Wampus Brook Park for a gala holiday lighting ceremony.

Frosty Day also includes a Frosty Scavenger Hunt for kids at the Hergenhan Rec Center on Maple Ave. At 2 p.m. there's an open house at the North Castle Historical Society at 440 Bedford Rd. and Frosty cartoons at the North Castle Public Library at 19 Whippoorwill Road East.

The lighting ceremony follows the parade at 5:00 p.m. and from 5 to 6:00 p.m. a Winter Walk will take place at several areas around town with hayrides, singers and a visit from Santa.

After the Winter Walk a concert by Jody Sandhaus, a New York-based cabaret vocalist and jazz stylist will be held at the library at 7:30 p.m. This is the second annual Frosty Day, which celebrates America's favorite snowman, who is featured in the song with lyrics written by Steve Nelson, who lived in Armonk.

"It was pretty much common knowledge that Mr. Nelson had Armonk in mind when he wrote the song," said Town Board member Rebecca Kittredge. "Matter of fact, the traffic cop who hollered 'Stop!' to Frosty was said to be based on the town's former chief of police, John Hergenhan."

This year's event features an expanded parade with new floats and a town marching band, said Ed Woodyard, the vice president of the North Castle Historical Society and a founding member of the Armonk Chamber of Commerce, who is organizing the event. Both organizations and the North Castle Public Library, are sponsoring it.

Last year about 1,000 attended the first Frosty Day, with at least that many expected this year, Woodyard noted.

"It brings together the whole town," he said
