Beginning last Friday, and extending through Sunday, volunteers have celebrated National hunger And Homelessness Awareness Week - a national endeavor started by the National Coalition for the Homeless to “promote education, action and awareness about hunger and homelessness” – by helping the most needy in their community.
Sponsored through Volunteer New York!’s inaugural Hunger Relief Corps program, participants will spend the week of service packing and delivering food for the hungry, stocking food pantries, training the needy on gardening techniques and building greenhouse boxes, amongst other community building events.
Volunteer New York! Director of Volunteer Engagement and Community Partner Relations Judy Douglas said that this week of service gives everybody involved an opportunity to reflect and give back to their community.
“This week of service is about action and reflection as we begin to evaluate what we are thankful for,” she said. “If you want to get involved right now, the Neighborhood Food Drive is a really hopeful and exciting new project we’ve started that anyone can participate in.
“We hope it will have an exponential impact on those who are in need in our community, as well as raise greater awareness among those who may be able or interested in helping.”
