Westchester Jewish Council Recognizes Outstanding Volunteers

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The Westchester Jewish Council (WJC) honored 19 outstanding community volunteers and UJA-Federation of New York at the 2017 Julian Y. Bernstein Distinguished Service Awards (JYBDSA) Ceremony on Wednesday, March 15, at Temple Israel Center of White Plains. The event attracted more than 250 attendees.

The 2017 recipients and their nominating organizations are as follows:

  • Chappaqua residents, Judy Grant, American Friends of Soroka and Joanna Segal, Bet Torah.
  • Harrison resident Emma Abramson, BBYO Westchester Region.
  • Armonk residents Charles Shapiro, Congregation B’nai Yisrael and Betty Knoop, Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center.
  • Mt. Kisco resident Alexandra Rosenberg, JCCA.
  • Yonkers resident Chuck Lesnick, JCY-Westchester Community Partners.
  • Scarsdale residents, Robin Samot, AIPAC, Carla Ifrah, Jewish Community Center of Harrison, and Shirley Shwiel, Westchester Jewish Community Services.
  • Bronx resident Ruth Loebmann, Metropolitan Jewish Health System (MJHS).
  • Mamaroneck resident Carla Fiorentino, The New Jewish Home – Sarah Neuman.
  • Stamford, Conn. resident Tania Weiss, Sinai Free Synagogue.
  • Hartsdale resident Gayle Aaron, Temple Beth Abraham.
  • White Plains residents Sandra Costin, Temple Israel Center of White Plains, Deborah Weinberger, Hebrew Institute of White Plains, and Mona Abramson, Westchester Jewish Council.
  • New Rochelle resident Sari Bedevian, Temple Israel of New Rochelle.
  • Dobbs Ferry resident Jerald Seti, Westchester Klezmer Program.

The Julian Y. Bernstein Distinguished Service Award is named after Julian Y. Bernstein (z”l), a former Westchester Jewish Council board member, who was a visionary communal leader, according to a release from WJC.

Prior to the awards ceremony, Westchester Jewish Council President Paul Warhit and Rabbi Gordon Tucker, Senior Rabbi, Temple Israel Center of White Plains shared remarks. Eric S. Goldstein, CEO, UJA-Federation of New York, was the keynote speaker.

This year’s program included a special tribute to UJA-Federation of New York in honor of their centennial celebration, the release said.

Honorees received the award for their service from members of the JYBDSA Committee. A dessert reception followed. The event was free and open to the community.
