"It's a very satisfying feeling," Thomas said. "To know that you're going out there and doing something good for someone, even if you don't necessarily even know them."
Thomas is North Castle's senior recreation leader in the Recreation Department and is in charge of coordinating North Castle's annual home-delivered meals program. During the days leading up to Thanksgiving, Thomas and a group of volunteers work in conjunction with the Pleasantville Senior Center to deliver non-perishable food items to senior citizens in the Armonk area who are in need. Thomas said they will deliver food and meals to 15 families in the area.
Most of the food is donated through the Food Bank for Westchester before it is bundled for the deliveries. Preparations for the deliveries are done well in advance of Thanksgiving as members of the North Castle Parks Department pick up the food in trucks, which Thomas said was a process in itself.
"The Parks Department has been wonderful for us," Thomas said. "The day they went to pick up the food it was pouring rain outside and they were lugging the boxes on and off the truck in that."
Thomas said that the food deliveries will be completed by Wednesday, just before Thanksgiving. The day will hopefully be an enjoyable one, especially given the recent circumstances for some.
"Everything is coming together nicely this year," Thomas said. "Especially with some seniors being negatively affected by the storms, it's a good feeling to help out."
