Breaking News: Heat Advisory: Steamy Day Will Be Followed By Severe Storms, Gusty Winds

I'm an NYC Marathoner: Tim Tully, New Rochelle

NEW YORK, NY -- On Sunday, over 40,000 people from across the globe will be taking part in the New York City Marathon. We'll be profiling several Westchester runners in the days leading up to the big race.

The first runner is Tim Tully, 28, of New Rochelle, who will be running his third NYC Marathon this year. Tully credits his brother Brendan with getting him into running.

"We were both swimmers growing up and once you finish college there's no competition unless you get into different sports so he found another way to compete through running and we were burned out from swimming since we swam our whole lives," Tully said.

Like many NYC runners, Tully is raising money for charity in exchange for entrance to the race. He is sponsored by the Boomer Esiason Foundation For Cystic Fibrosis.

"Unfortunately his (Esiason's) son, who goes to Boston College where I went and swam, suffers from it so I instantly wanted to help," Tully said.  "Almost all the parents I coach for helped contribute to raise the required amount for me to participate, along with the other swim club I coach year round based out of Larchmont, the Badger Swim Club."

Tully, an Iona Prep graduate, said the athletic mindset he got from competing there is what drives him to run and finish the marathon.

"My first year (2009) I went 3:10, and 3:08 last year, so anything around three hours is ideal," Tully said.

Some advice for first time marathon runners from Tully:

1. "You're going to hit a wall between miles 15-20 no matter what. It's expected and it's all in the mind."

2. "It's okay to walk at the water stop and take the full glass of water to make sure you're hydrated," Tully said.

3. "I've been told to have a pasta dinner Friday night, not Saturday night," Tully said. "Saturday should be more protein like chicken or something like that. I've been doing that the last few years and I think it works."
