MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- Loved by some and feared by many, the turning forward of clocks to begin daylight saving time this Sunday marks the unofficial end of the winter doldrums. Although the switch offers an extra hour of daylight in the evenings, the gain is often at the expense of our circadian rhythms.

According to Dr. Praveen Rudraraju, Director at Northern Westchester Hospital's Center for Sleep Medicine, the hour time change affects people differently. Some are able to quickly adjust to the loss of an hour of sleep, while others spend weeks struggling to recalibrate their sleep patterns.

While there is no one secret to waking up on March 13 and feeling refreshed, Dr. Rudraraju suggests skipping the pre-sleep snack and slowly relaxing before bed can help make the adjustment easier. Visit the NWH blog post to read more tips from Dr. Rudraraju and find out what foods can help make you sleep better.
