In recent weeks, commuters traveling on the sidewalk adjacent to Pelham Parkway have noticed dozens of small holes in the surrounding bushes, where rats, mice and other critters have taken up shelter.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, burrows may indicate the presence of rats, but could also indicate other burrowing animals, such as chipmunks.

The village has been proactive with the rodents, setting up several bait traps to capture the unwanted guests in the most populated areas. Despite the traps, a handful of dead creatures were visible in the grass on Tuesday and commuters reported seeing several rats running around on their way to work in the morning.

Officials with the Pelham Manor Department of Public Works could not immediately be reached for comment on Tuesday afternoon. Keep following the Daily Voice for more information about the Pelham Manor rodent problem as it becomes available.
