MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- For veterans returning home, the dangers of the battlefield are often replaced with depolyment-related medical complications. Among the side effects of combat is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, which affects more than 15 percent of all VA patients. However, thanks to Northern Westchester Hospital's Pulmonary Rehab program , veterans and their lungs are gaining a new lease on life.

Deployed military personnel encounter a wide variety of environmental inhalation exposures, such as desert dust, burn pits, exhaust fumes, mold exposures, detonation debris and industrial fires. Exposure to these harsh toxins have produced an emerging spectrum of deployment-related respiratory disorders, including COPD, asthma and vocal cord dysfunction.

Enter the experts at Northern Westchester Hospital. "Our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is uniquely designed to meet the needs of our veterans, who suffer from chronic respiratory disease," said Dr. Harlan Weinberg, Medical Director of Pulmonary Rehabilitation at the hospital. "COPD is a common, preventable and treatable disease, but is under-recognized, under-diagnosed and under-treated."

The Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Wellness Program at Northern Westchester Hospital offers a therapy program to veterans that is currently unavailable elsewhere in New York State. Specialists work with veterans who suffer from chronic respiratory disease, allowing them to improve their physical fitness and breathing capacity.

In the program, pulmonary rehab therapists with experience treating veterans conduct a thorough pulmonary rehab evaluation. In doing so, Northern Westchester Hospital seeks to serve those who serve our country

For veterans and non-veterans alike suffering from diminished lung capacity, visit NWH Pulmonary Rehab Chappaqua Crossing or call 914-458-8700, Ext. 5, for additional information.
