Thanks to a recent feature in the New York Times, thousands of others may now be giving the once deteriorating, high-crime area a second look.

The revitalization of the area began in 1999, and since then, the 2.4-square-mile Westchester County village has become a mecca for shopping and luxury homes, while still being affordable for more middle-income residents, the paper found.

What made the paper take a new look at the once blight-ridden town, was a massive turnaround with the construction of the Water at Port Chester mall, quickly followed by the re-opening downtown of the Capitol Theater, an array of ethnic restaurants and the building of three luxury rental buildings.

Even the police chief told the newspaper that most people wouldn't recognize the village today with lower crime rates and its new prosperity.

Other factors leading to the town's revival include an urban, city-like downtown, affordable housing and a continued expansion that includes a proposal by Starwood Capitol to convert an old hospital building into a retail, commercial and residential development and another focused on the village's mile-long waterfront.

Housing prices are also a draw, the paper said with a median sales price for a single-family home priced around $486,000. In addition, there are currently 26 single-family homes on the market. The least expensive listed at $299,000. The most expensive, at $6,999,000. There are also 13 multi-family homes for sale, from $315,000 to $600,000; 24 apartments from $39,000 to $245,000; and four condominiums, from $269,000 to $425,000.

To top that, the paper also pointed to the village's six parks and a post office on the National Register of Historic Places, as one of the reasons Port Chester is currently a great place to reside.
