On May 3-4 United Way Westchester and Putnam will launch its Give Local Westchester & Putnam campaign. The 24-hour online giving event asks the community to donate to 117 local, not-for-profit agencies that support the community through the arts, education, elder care, crisis support and more. Nationally, Give Local America raised more than $68 million last year.

Here’s the story of one local organization that will be looking for support during Give Local this year.

Laura was in a verbally abusive marriage for many years without any hope of a way out. One night the abuse escalated to physical violence. That moment pushed Laura to make the difficult and dangerous decision to leave. She came to My Sisters’ Place’s emergency shelters.

Although it was a scary change and there was a lot of uncertainty in the future for Laura and her daughter, they finally felt safe. She said, “I wasn’t exactly sure what (it) meant, but I did know that no one would ever yell, scream, throw things, intimidate, scare, curse, punch walls, break door knobs, hide my keys, phone or glasses, threaten or belittle me or my child again.”

Through direct services, My Sister’s Place has been supporting victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, stalking and human trafficking, in seeking safety, self- determination, and justice for almost 40 years in Westchester County. Video

“I'm so proud to be a supporter of My Sisters' Place! Their work to provide hope, achieve justice, and change lives uplifts the community and offers refuge and security to victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. Unfortunately, the need for these services in our county is critical so I encourage you to consider supporting MSP on Give Local day,” said Jessica Hendricks Yee, Founder of The Brave Collection.
