Monarch Attracts Snow Birds

If you've noticed a new buzz-phrase - " urban living " - cropping up in the media, you're not alone. And if you're wondering just what it means, ask Peter and Naomi Bass. They're living the "urban lifestyle" at their new home at the Monarch at Ridge Hill in Yonkers.

Urban living is a hybrid between living in the suburbs and living in the city. The lifestyle appeals to both young couples who want more space than Manhattan apartments can offer and to older couples who have downsized from the big family house with a large yard.

The Yonkers waterfront has recently undergone a transformation with the construction of luxury condominium complexes, which offer more than just a place to rest your head. Owners and tenants have access to luxury amenities right on their doorsteps, ranging from high-end merchants and supermarkets to sports facilities and spas. Some complexes are mixed-use, with office space and medical centers. All have 24-hour concierge service.

When the Basses retired, sold their Westchester home and moved to Highland Beach, Fla. they wanted to keep some roots in the New York area for when they come to visit their daughters in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. and in Connecticut. High on the list of their must-haves was that the new place be no further than 30 minutes from Manhattan. They wanted to live close to shops, restaurants, a movie theater, airports and the Westchester Mall. Monarch at Ridge Hill has everything on their must-have list, and the Basses like that it was designed with an eye on the environment. Floors are made of renewable bamboo and the complex is energy-efficient. They like being able to walk everywhere, including to the shuttle that takes them to the Metro North station for the 28-minute ride into the city. But what they like most of all is "the close proximity to our family and friends." Are you looking for a second home in the New York metro area?
