VALHALLA, N.Y. -- Whether it's with charcoal or pellets, wood or gas, grilling outdoors is one of the hallmarks of summer. However, mixing fire and food has the potential for disaster.

Each year, thousands of families across the country experience an array of grill-related mishaps. The accidents range from small skin burns to house and property damage. In many instances, a simple double check before lighting the match or pressing the starter can keep you and your house from ending up well-done.

Al fresco chefs should observe the 'Ten Foot Rule' by making sure their grill is at least ten feet away from the house, railings, branches, spray cans and other combustible home goods. This buffer goes for guests too; don't invite a crowd to admire your grill marks in case a flame should flare up. If you use propane make sure your tank is clean, free of cracks and properly fitted to the hose. Leaking propane can turn the area around your grill into a literal powder keg.
