SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- For children thinking about what instruments he or she might like to play, look no further than Scarsdale's Hoff-Barthelson Music School . The school will host a children’s concert, "Breath in Motion – Wind Instruments Come to Life!," on Friday, March 24 as the school continues its long tradition of introducing children to music.

The concert will serve as an introduction to the woodwind family of musical instruments and will feature school faculty performing everything from Bach to jazz.

"We have a tradition of presenting concerts for young people at Hoff-Barthelson because it's such a great way to bring music to children," said Ruth Alperson, Dean of Hoff-Barthelson Music School and former student and teacher. "It's one of the most wonderful experiences a child could have. Our goal is to instill a love of music in all of our students."

Designed to be educational, engaging and fun for children and their families, "Breath in Motion" will allow families to explore the sounds of a variety of woodwinds. Suitable for ages five and up, the concert is free of charge and audience participation is encouraged. Guests are invited to bring their recorders and join the performers by playing simple folk songs.

"The concert is going to be a mix of students and faculty playing instruments including the bassoon, oboe, saxophone, clarinet and flute," said Alperson. "After the concert, we will have a "petting zoo" where children can try out and feel all the different wind instruments."

Faculty performers include Elly Ball, Donna Elaine and Joseph Piscitelli who will play recorders and flutes; Dorothy Duncan, clarinet; Elizabeth Condon, oboe; Janet Grice, bassoon and Ed Palermo, clarinet and saxophone.

"I think children are inspired when they hear and experience live music and they don't often have the opportunity to see some of these wind instruments, particularly double reeds, " said Alperson. "We know that learning an instrument opens a whole world of art and ideas and enhances learning in general."

The concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Hoff-Barthelson Music School, 25 School Lane, Scarsdale.
