White Plains Hospital Offers Events To 'Take Charge Of Your Health'

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – White Plains Hospital is presenting a new series of community education events called “Take Charge of Your Health.”

Two events are planned for April in Scarsdale and Pelham, with additional topics and locations to be announced in the near future.  

“Sorting Through the Headlines: Learning the Facts about Cancer” will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 22 at the Scarsdale Public Library and “Breast Cancer Risk Reduction and Updated Approach for Breast Cancer Screening” will take place from 7:30-8:30 p.m.Thursday, April 23 at the Pelham Public Library. 

 “Sorting through the Headlines: Learning the Facts about Cancer” will allow attendees to sit down for an open discussion with Joshua Raff, MD, a board-certified hematologist/oncologist and leader of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Program at White Plains Hospital. This educational event will help participants learn the truth behind recent headlines in the news. Topics to be covered include:

  • The “Angelina Jolie Effect” is influencing women fighting breast and ovarian cancer – but is it right for everyone?
  • “Using Poliovirus to Kill Cancer” – Learn more about a clinical trial that uses poliovirus to treat a form of brain cancer (glioblastoma), as recently seen on the television show 60 Minutes. 
  • “Vitamin D and Colorectal Cancer” – What is the link between higher levels of Vitamin D and colorectal cancer prevention?

The second lecture in the series will be “Breast Cancer Risk Reduction and Updated Approach for Breast Cancer Screening.” Sara Sadan, MD, chief of oncology and hematology and director of breast and women’s medical oncology at White Plains Hospital, and Pamela Weber, MD, director, White Plains Imaging at New Rochelle, will discuss the following topics:

  • How to reduce your risk of breast cancer
  • The latest screening technology for breast cancer, including 3D mammography and 3D ultrasound
  • An updated approach to breast cancer screening
