NWH Gala Co-Chair Caryn Schechtman Finds Reward In Giving Back

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- The invitation came last December. That's when Northern Westchester Hospital approached Caryn Schechtman about serving as the co-chair for its annual gala.

A few months later, came another invite. The hospital asked her to also chair its foundation board. Schechtman could not turn down either request.

“It’s such a worthwhile place to volunteer,’’ said Schechtman, an attorney who works in New York City and lives in Bedford Corners. “It’s a rewarding way to give back to our community.”

The gala at Old Salem Farm in North Salem will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Gino Martocci and Dr. Elisa Burns will be the honorees. Schechtman and her husband, David, co-chaired the gala committee along with Daun Paris, an NWH trustee, and her husband, Peter Hauspurg. The theme of the event is "Autumn in Arcadia."

Schechtman, Paris and their committee decided to move the gala from the Saw Mill Club to Old Salem Farm. Besides being a bigger venue, the new farm allowed the committee to create a theme centered on nature, horses and the outdoors.

“The Saw Mill Club has been very good to the hospital,’’ Schechtman said. “However, when the farm became a venue option, the gala committee was excited to embrace this change. It’s a well-attended event, and Old Salem Farm was one of the few venues that could accommodate our size. It’s a beautiful space, right in our community and owned by philanthropic community members who appreciate and generously support the hospital. It was a logical choice.”

Abigail Kirsch will cater the event.

Schechtman said the theme of the gala reflects the marriage between the community and Northern Westchester Hospital.

“It reflects what the community has in Northern Westchester Hospital – a technologically advanced, patient-centered hospital situated right here in this idyllic and beautiful countryside,’’ Schechtman said.

Schechtman has been a member of the NWH Foundation Board for three years and is a trustee of the hospital. In her various roles, she works together with the board and hospital leadership to set strategy, raise funds and increase awareness about Northern Westchester Hospital.

This is her first time serving on the gala committee. She said the committee worked well together because it was a diverse group.

“They all care about the hospital,’’ Schechtman said. “But it was important that each committee member brought a unique skill set to the table. We worked to incorporate new participants from our community as well as members from past committees who helped bring continuity. I was sort of the newbie.”

But she’s quick to point out, that the hospital not only welcomes newbies, they are embraced. “The hospital thrives on the support, commitment and enthusiasm of community volunteers. There are people who have given decades of their lives to supporting our hospital and there are others who have just begun this rewarding journey. All are equally appreciated and valued. The annual gala is only one of a number of volunteer opportunities available.”
