Seven years ago, the Town Council of North Castle member and recycling liaison, founded "Zero Waste Days," which provide residents the opportunity to get rid of their electronic waste and scrap metal in a safe and efficient manner.
"I realized there was a need for it," Roth said. "The town wasn't recycling as much as it should've been, so I formed a committee and we have wonderful people on it. The first Saturday of every month, we have e-waste and a scrap metal drop off behind Town Hall." Residents can dispose of computers, fax machines, televisions, and anything else electronic, in addition to scrap metal they may have. Roth said the program nets between 50 and 100 drop-offs per month, which pays off in a number of ways for the town and its residents. "We want people to dispose of toxic and environmentally unsafe items and dispose of them properly," she said. "If they're put on the curbside, two things happen. One, it gets picked up and put in a landfill. Two, it costs us money. We pay by the tonnage to have things on the curbside. The more we keep off the curbside, the better off it is for us because it saves the town money. Not only are we being environment friendly, but we're budget friendly, too." Any money the committee makes off the scrap metal, is put right back into the program. "We make a few pennies on it and put it towards buying new recycling bins," Roth said. "We're buying 10 for our parks and we're really excited about it."
