SOMERS, N.Y. -- The 2014 Friends of Lasdon Park Plant Show is set for Saturday, May 17 in Somers.
A new meadow celebrating the wonder of the Monarch butterfly will be featured in the 2014 Friends of Lasdon Park Plant Show from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial in Somers
“Monarch Meadow” will feature milkweed and butterfly weed plots, and a trail and interpretive signs to guide visitors through the habitat and promote the significance of conservation and our native butterflies, according to a press release.
"The native Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) has an incredible journey within its lifetime – beginning its trip here and flying down to pine-oak forests in Mexico," representatives said in the release. "Butterfly habitats everywhere are threatened by development, pesticides and other human activities. This site is dedicated to providing safe habitat for this small natural treasure."
The plant sale will have selections ideal for creating a butterfly meadow, including milkweed and butterfly weed. Other selections include fruit trees, berry plants, herbaceous plants, mushrooms, perennials, trees and shrubs and plants for woodland gardens.
"An array of vendors will offer unique horticultural- and botanical-related items for sale, including pottery, garden art and more," representative said. "Lasdon’s Garden Shop will have gift selections, a variety of houseplants, patio plants and refreshments, including delicious hot dogs."
A free botanical art show will be held from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the main house to highlight works from botanical art students.
The Plant Sale is part of the joint efforts by the Westchester County Parks Department and the Friends of Lasdon to raise funds to build a public Conservatory at Lasdon Park and Arboretum.
Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial is on Route 35.
