The fire broke out at about 2:18 a.m. at 10 Kuberski Drive in Sayreville, police said.

Upon the arrival of police, heavy smoke and fire was seen coming out of the rear second story window, police said in a statement.

A neighbor advised officers that a male is the only person who resides in the residence and should be home as his vehicle was in the driveway.

Officers forced entry to the residence but were immediately met with heavy smoke and fire preventing entry, police said. Sayreville Fire Department arrived on scene and began to extinguish the blaze.

The home's occupant was pronounced dead at the scene. His name had not been released pending notification of the next of kin.

The cause of the fire and circumstances of the death are still under investigation, said Captain Daniel Plumacker, a police department spokesman.
