The free program offers a closer look at the refugee crisis in Western Europe. Ford and Irina Patkanian offer their first-hand accounts of their experiences on Lesbos Island, Greece, a major entry point through which nearly one million people entered the European Union in 2015.

Since the beginning of 2016, almost 10 times the amount of people have entered Lesbos Island than at the same point last year. Ford and Patkanian put a human face on the crisis, offering video footage, audio clips, still photography and discarded items from the shores.

There will be an opportunity for a question-and-answer session after the presentation.

Ford’s work has appeared in the New York Times, The Royal Academy of Arts, Connecticut Cottages and Gardens, Leading Landscape Professionals and other publications. As a videographer, Ford worked on the movie Mule Skinner Blues and several documentaries he shot in Russia, Mozambique, Cuba, Turkey and Greece.

Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Patkanian is an award-winning filmmaker, a Fulbright fellow, professor of film production at CUNY, and the president of In Parenthesis, a NYC-based nonprofit film and theater company. Patkanian is a recipient of grants from the American Association of University Women, New York State Council of the Arts, Tow, Blaustein, Troy and Jerome Foundations. She currently is finishing a stop motion animation/documentary that she developed at MacDowell Artists’ Colony.
